Remodel How-To: Selecting New Cabinet Hardware

Design is in the details, as the saying goes. When undertaking a renovation project in your home, there are MANY details to consider from base materials to finishes. Yet, one feature of the overall design that we often see homeowners forget: cabinet hardware.

The knob or pull you choose can have a massive visual impact on your design. Think about it, large reflective brass pacific pulls will make an entirely different impact than iron Riverwood knobs against all-white cabinetry.

Here’s our professional remodeling team’s straightforward guide to selecting the quintessential cabinetry hardware for your newly upgraded kitchen or bathroom!

Choosing Cabinetry Hardware

Real quick, there are two main kinds of hardware to choose from: knobs and pulls.

Knobs

Knobs have smaller profiles, are generally less expensive, and are easier to install than pulls since they only require one screw.

Pulls

This hardware selection makes a bigger statement than knobs. They come in a variety of sizes and complement drawers and larger cabinets, although they tend to come at a higher cost.

Mix and match or go for a streamlined look, keeping them all the same throughout. When we’re refacing or replacing your cabinets now is the time to get the space you’ve dreamed of.

Pro Tip: Whether you choose knobs or pulls, a good rule of thumb is to select a length one-third of the entire cabinet or drawer width. Your eyes should seamlessly follow the length of the pull across the width of the drawer, or up the cabinet door.

Cabinet Hardware Completes the Look

After deciding on the hardware type, consider the look you want to achieve in your space.

  • For a traditional or heritage style, opt for hardware with ridges, curved silhouettes, and textured features.

  • A more contemporary look is best complimented by clean lines and sleek, minimal profiles.

Find Your Finish

When finding the best finish, consider creating contrast with the elements in your home. Warm Gauntlet Grey cabinets would be well-served with silver or brass hardware. If your kitchen or bathroom is mostly High Reflective White, a dark finish would look incredibly sleek.

There is no rule that you have to stick to the same hardware across the board. Become a master of mixing metals! In a more eclectic kitchen, brass hardware can look stunning with black lighting fixtures. An antique bronze finish could also look beautiful with rose gold.
